Leaders from Within

Friday, November 30th, 2007

When we first began the Horizon Project many of our community members never thought of themselves as leaders. Through Leadership Plenty this thought has changed. We have learned to begin looking for leaders within our community instead looking outside of our community. We now identify community assets rather than our deficits, realize that conflict is not always a bad thing and that it can be resolved. We definitely know we have built new partnerships, have sharpened our communication skills, and went from just talking about issues to doing something about them.

We have come together as a community to write our community strategic plan and set forth our goals for the future of Tripp. We have people heading up these goals and have taken on leadership roles, with the help of Leadership Plenty. They are heading up teams to achieve the goals they have set forth and will use what they have learned such as finding assets, resolving conflict to achieve the goals that have been set.

Different forms of Poverty

Friday, November 30th, 2007

When we first began the Horizons Project and we discussed poverty, we always talked about it in terms of money. Through the Horizons project we have learned that poverty is not only about money, it also can be emotional, mental, spiritual, physical (being alone), also not have some sort of support system (doing without support of family and friends, and not always having access to good jobs. We have also learned poverty affects the entire community of Tripp.

We have come together to do community clean up for whoever is in need. We also hosted a town & county exchange, where people donated unwanted or unused items and furniture. The items were then offered to the public free of charge. A free will donation box was set out for those wanting to donate and that was given to the local food pantry to purchase needed items, so it became a pay it forward event. We have also begun a verbal campaign to encourage our community to buy from local businesses whenever possible.

Tripp LeadershipPLENTYRemember those “FUN“ pre and post surveys that the Horizons Staff had you take during Study Circles and LeadershipPLENTY?

Believe it or not - it was for a purpose!  Those pre and post surveys help us to understand how much your community learned about poverty and about leadership by your participation in those specified curriculums.

As a result, we have assembled a community profile with the results of the pre and post surveys for both Study Circles and LeadershipPLENTY.  Check out your community results by clicking on the links found under “Survey Data” on the right hand side of your community blog.
